Hilary Erhard Duff was born to Robert Erhard Duff and Susan Colleen Cobb on September 28, 1987. This Houston native made an early start to her acting career upon encouragement from her mother. Hilary Duff and her elder sister were coached in acting and were soon landing roles in local theater productions.
Hilary Duff relocated to California with her mother in order to establish an acting career. Today, she is considered on par with Britney Spears and according to some she has already surpassed Britney as the hottest pop diva around. However, things were not always so rosy for Ms Hilary Duff who moved from television commercials to uncredited bit roles in films such as the comedy drama “Playing by Heart” and the western miniseries True Women.
Her role as Wendy, the human companion of Casper, in the 1998 film Casper and Wendy was her first meaty role and it gave audiences a taste of her acting prowess. In 1999, Hilary Duff earned the “Young Artist Award” for the film The Soul Collector. Then, Lizzie McGuire happened and the Hilary Duff saga took a firm step toward fame and fortune. Few people know that before Lizzie McGuire happened, Hilary Duff had almost decided to chuck it all after she was dropped from the cast of the NBC sitcom Daddio even though she had done a pilot episode. Encouragement from her mother kept Hilary Duff going and she landed Lizzie McGuire a week later. This career defining show on the Disney Channel attracted more than 2 million viewers per episode.
The show broke all records for it s time slot and was Disney’s No.1 series and was a big hit with the preteen brigade and 65 episodes of the show later, Hilary Duff had taken a giant stride toward making it big on the big screen – she was acting in the film spin off of the show - The Lizzie McGuire Movie. This 2003 film was a runaway hit and grossed $40 million at the box office. Although, it’s with her debut music album – Metamorphosis, that Hilary broke into the music scene, she was singing before that as well. The big screen version of Lizzie McGuire had singles "Why Not" and "I Can't Wait" by Hilary Duff. In 2002, Hilary Duff recorded a Christmas album called Santa Claus Lane and earlier she found time to further establish her acting repertoire by doing a role in an indie film Human Nature.
The aptly named Metamorphosis album saw Hilary Duff leave behind her Lizzie McGuire image and present a new facet of her personality to her fans. The songs in the album had trendy and contemporary music and its single “So Yesterday” was at the top of the pop charts in the summer of its release. The fall of 2003 saw Hilary Duff embark on a concert tour but not before she found time to star with Steve Martin in Cheaper by the Dozen and making her presence felt at the MTV Video Music Awards and the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards. Hilary’s recent activities include launching a podcast of her music video on iTunes and celebrating her birthday in September.
